Black Space (2011) is a dark, handmade stop-motion experiment that began with the words: “armed to the teeth.”
I came across the phrase while reading, and it sparked a short scene in my imagination. From there, I began building and animating. The rough, tactile quality became part of the film’s unsettling world.
Working in stop-motion is slow. That slowness gave me room to discover what might happen next while making it, allowing the narrative to take shape frame by frame. The story remained abstract, guided by atmosphere and association.
Looking back, I recognise an approach that still runs through my work: beginning with an image and discovering the world around it.
Black Space has been screened at festivals in the Netherlands and internationally.
